Interior Design should not to be confused with Interior Decoration. This tends to
be only a superficial treatment to give a style change or ‘make-
Companies like Niro Design, who specialise mostly in residential design, have found it necessary to differentiate the work they do from the ‘painters and decorators’ who use the term interior designers in a misappropriated way. They, along with a multitude of TV programmes, have added to the dilution of the professional qualifications which need to be acquired to become a fully qualified Interior Designer.
Qualified Interior Designers should be viewed as Interior Architects, and their abilities should cover building and architectural work to a property including minor/major structural alterations –even down to building extensions. The full range of technical services that make up a building will be undertaken by the designer including electrics, lighting, plumbing etc. They will then cover all the decoration elements like colour schemes, finishes and furnishings. But, this is not necessarily the starting point for a project. Space planning and manipulation, staircase positioning and design, and the dynamic flow of a space are the core planning elements which need to be structurally and technically addressed long before a paintbrush is seen.
